Submitting an article for CQ-TV
When you submit an article for inclusion in the CQ-TV magazine, it would help
enormously if you follow the guidelines provided here.
- Always include a covering letter! It need not be very long, or detailed - this
will depend on your article and how much explanation you deem is neccessary.
It will save me having to contact you later to clarify something if you can explain
it first.
- Send the text of the article as a plain text file wherever possible.
These are the file formats, in order of preference, that I will accept for the text
of your article:
- article.txt - plain text file
- article.rtf - rich text file
- article.odt - OpenOffice document
- article.pdf - Adobe PDF file (please make sure it is not secured or password
protected)
- article.doc - Microsoft Word 2007 (or earlier)
- Please send any images as separate files, in the highest resolution possible.
- It is ok to embed images in a document in order to show a preferred layout, but
please - ALWAYS include them as separate files as well. I can accept the following
graphic file formats:
- If you have a preferred way your article should be laid out in the magazine,
please do let me know, here's how, in order of preference:
- Plain text file containing written instructions
- OpenOffice document
- Adobe PDF file
- Microsoft Word document
- Image of the article as a JPG, GIF or PNG
- If the article is submitted in a format that supports different fonts, please
restrict it to the following standard fonts:
- arial
- comic sans ms
- courier
- georgia
- helvetica
- times new roman
- verdana
- CQ-TV is produced primarily using "times new roman" and "arial" fonts,
please bear this in mind when submitting your article.
- Please try to restrict the text in your article to the basic western alphabet.
If you need to have characters that are not "English", please make a note of this
fact in your covering letter. e.g. characters with circumflex, accents, umlauts,
etc.
Sending in your article
There are several different methods available for sending your article in.
In all cases, you should zip up your article and send it in as one .zip file.
Even if it is only one small text file, I would still prefer it zipped, please!
For those working on Linux, I am happy to accept gzip'd files as well. Please
tar all the separate files, then gzip the tar file and send me the .tar.gz file.
If you send it in this format, it is important that the file has the extension
.tar.gz so my unpacker knows to gunzip then untar !
- Online - This is the preferred method and is available
HERE. You still need to zip up your article, then
upload it as a single file.
- Email - Please zip up your articles files, even if it's just one file, then attach
the zip file to your email and send it to: editor@batc.org.uk
- My MX (email) server will only accept emails under 10MBytes in total, because of
the way email attachments are created, your 7MByte zip file may well end up bigger than
10MBytes by the time it is attached to your email.
Generally, if your zip file is under 7MBytes in size, it should get through, if it's
bigger than 7MBytes, chances are it will not, so don't bother trying!
- FTP - Send me an email requesting access to the FTP site and I will reply with the
details.
